SEO vs Google Ads: Which One First?Spend in the Right Order
If you need work this week, start with a small, tight Google Ads campaign. If your workshop is stable and you are building for next year, start with SEO. Most workshops end up using both, and the order decides how much money is wasted.
- What each one really costs
- When each one wins
- The order that works
- From an agency that runs both
Which One First? The Short Answer
Ask an ads agency and ads win. Ask an SEO agency and SEO wins. We run both, so here is the answer by situation.
If you need work this week
Start With Google Ads
Ads can put you on page one within days. Keep the campaign small, on your most profitable service, and fix how the phone is answered.
If you are building for next year
Start With SEO
SEO takes months to build, then keeps bringing calls with no fee for each click. This is where durable local growth comes from.
If your website does not convert
Fix That First
Both ads and SEO send people to your website and your Google profile. If those leak, you pay to lose customers either way.

We run both, so the only thing left to sell you is the truth.
Why You Can Trust This Answer
Our plans include both. On our top plan, Google Ads are managed at no extra management fee, so we do the work whichever one wins.
The useful question is which one comes first, and what follows. A workshop that plans to be around in five years will almost certainly use both.
Two Ways Onto the Same Page
Search "mechanic near me" and Google shows three kinds of result. One is bought. Two are earned.
You pay each time someone clicks. Stop paying and you are gone the same day.
Earned through your Google Business Profile, your reviews and how close you are.
Earned by pages on your own website. There is no fee for a click.
What Google Says About Each
Ads are an auction. Google's help pages say Ad Rank decides whether your ad shows and where. It weighs your bid and the quality of your ad and landing page, so a better page can pay less for the same spot.
Google also explains what a click actually costs: often less than your maximum bid, and only enough to beat the advertiser below you.
Rankings cannot be bought. Google's guide to hiring an SEO says advertising with Google has no effect on where you appear in the search results. Its guide How Search Works says it takes no payment to rank a site higher.
Google Ads Help and Google Search Central, read in October 2026.
So an ad position is rented, and a ranking is built. Neither is good or bad. They do different jobs on the same page.
SEO vs Google Ads, Head to Head
Six rows, no favourites. The last two decide the order.
| What | Google Ads | SEO |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Clicks within days of launch | First movement in two to three months |
| Cost over time | The same every month. Every click is bought at auction. | Front loaded. The pages keep earning after they are paid for. |
| When you stop paying | Traffic ends the same day | Pages and rankings stay yours, and keep working |
| Trust of the click | Marked "Sponsored" | An earned position, in the map and the search results |
| Best at | Instant visibility, testing an offer, seasonal pushes | Durable growth and owning your suburb's searches |
| Worst at | Patience. It cannot build an asset. | Urgency. It cannot save this month. |
What Happens When the Ad Budget Stops
This is the pattern over twelve months, with the ad budget paused after month eight.
Months. A sketch of the pattern, not a forecast. Your own numbers will differ.

A rental and a build. Nobody confuses those on purpose.
A Rental and a Build
An ad click costs the same in month twenty as it did in month one. A page you paid for in month one is still bringing calls in month twenty, at no new cost.
That is why the cost of each lead stays flat on one line and falls on the other.
How Much Do Google Ads Cost?
There is no price list. You pay for each click, and the price is set by auction. These are the prices advertisers pay for one click on the searches a workshop wants.
| Search | One click |
|---|---|
| car service near me | US$3.72 |
| mechanic near me | US$3.69 |
| diesel mechanic near me | US$3.63 |
| logbook service near me | US$3.50 |
| mobile mechanic near me | US$3.37 |
| roadworthy certificate near me | US$3.16 |

A Click Is Not a Customer
Only some clicks call, and only some calls book. So the real cost of a job from ads is several clicks, not one.
This is why the page the click lands on matters so much. A page that converts well lowers the cost of every job. Google says a higher quality ad and page can also pay less for each click.
Many agencies also charge a management fee on top of what you pay Google.
Rent the Same Clicks for a Year
Put in the clicks you want each month and what one click costs you. See what a year of renting them adds up to.
Your ad clicks.
Tap the buttons. Use your own currency throughout.
The ad figure is clicks multiplied by your cost per click, before any management fee. Build is $500 setup plus twelve months at $1,000, and the pages built stay on your website. Neither figure is a promise of jobs.
When Each One Wins
When Google Ads Win
- ✓A new workshop that needs the phone ringing this month
- ✓A seasonal push, such as before holiday road trips
- ✓Testing which offer works before you build pages around it
- ✓Covering searches your rankings have not reached yet
When SEO Wins
- ✓Every month after the early ones
- ✓Earning your place in the map results
- ✓Lowering the cost of each lead over time
- ✓Building something that is still yours if you stop
The Order That Works for a Workshop
Foundation, then engine, then accelerant.
Foundation
A website that converts, a healthy Google Business Profile, and reviews. Both channels land here.
Engine
SEO builds the asset: ranking pages for your services and your suburbs.
Accelerant
Ads, pointed only at pages the organic data has already proven to convert.

Flat on one line, falling on the other. The crossover decides the order.
The Most Expensive Mistake
Ads first, on a website that leaks. You pay auction prices to find out your own page does not win the call.
When ads come last, every paid click lands on a page the organic data has already proven. You are buying more of what works.
How We Run Both Together
The order above is how our plans are built. Every price is published.
| Plan | SEO engine | Google Ads |
|---|---|---|
| Boost, $500 a month | Foundation, plus one ranking page a week | Not yet. The foundation has to convert first. |
| Build, $1,000 a month | Two ranking pages a week, backlinks, every review answered by hand | An optional add on, once the data shows which pages convert. |
| Boss, $2,000 a month | Four ranking pages a week, social posts and video | Managed at no extra management fee. You fund only the ad spend. |
Boost is currently unavailable. Full inclusions are on the pricing page.

SemCar Automotive Group

Direction requests rose 140.7%, from the Google Business Profile.
Singh Mechanic Workshop

Our 90 Day Guarantee. If your tracked keyword rankings in Mangools and your search performance in Google Search Console have not improved within three months of setup, you receive a full refund of your setup fee and every retainer you have paid.
Try Google Ads Without Burning the Budget
If you want to test ads yourself, these five settings stop most of the waste. Or hand both channels over.
A small, safe test
Do It Yourself
- 1Run one Search campaign. Leave the display network and other extras off until you have data.
- 2Target your own suburbs. Show ads only to people in the area you can serve.
- 3Pick one profitable service. Send every click to that service's own page, not your home page.
- 4Block the wrong searches. Add negative keywords such as jobs, courses, free and DIY.
- 5Cap the daily budget and count the calls. Set a daily limit you can afford to lose while you learn.
Done for you
Have It Done
- The foundation fixed before a dollar goes to ads
- Ranking pages built every week
- Ads pointed only at pages proven to convert
- Both reported in tools you can open yourself
- A full refund if nothing improves in three months
