How to Get More Google ReviewsA Steady Stream, Inside Google's Rules

Ask every customer at handover, send your Google review link the same day, and reply to every review. That is the whole system. Never offer a reward, never ask only your happy customers, and never set staff a target. Google bans all three.

Why Reviews Decide Who Gets the Call

A driver comparing two workshops in the map results decides in seconds. The review count and the star rating do most of the deciding, before a word of either website is read.

Reviews work twice. They persuade the person, and they help you rank: Google's guide to local ranking says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking.

The workshops with the most reviews are rarely the best workshops. They are the ones with a system. Willingness to leave a review fades within a day, and a system catches it first.

Seconds to decide, and the stars do the deciding.

The System: Five Steps That Never Miss

Five steps. None of them is clever. All of them are consistent, and all of them sit inside Google's rules.

Step 1

Ask at Handover

When the keys go back, say it plainly: reviews keep a small workshop alive, would you mind leaving one?

Step 2

Send the Link Same Day

Text your Google review link straight after, while the goodwill is fresh. One line, their name, a thank you.

Step 3

Make It One Tap

Use the same link everywhere: in the text, on a QR card at the counter, on the invoice.

Step 4

Reply to Every Review

Thank them by name and mention the job. A bad review gets a calm, factual reply.

Step 5

Make It Routine

Ask every customer, as part of closing every job. No blitzes, no droughts, no staff targets.

Five glowing stages connected in a line on a dark board, ending in a row of stars

None of it clever. All of it consistent.

How to Ask for Google Reviews Without It Feeling Pushy

Ask at the relief moment: the car is fixed, the bill was fair, and the keys are back in their hand. It lands as a favour to a business they already like.

Then let them do it later, in their own time. Google's policy says a business should not pressure customers to write a review while they are on the premises. So you ask at the counter, and the link does the rest.

What Google Allows, and What It Bans

Asking for reviews is allowed. Google's tips for getting more reviews says so in plain words. Its content policy for Google Maps then sets out what is not. Some of it catches honest workshops out.

Allowed

  • ✓Asking every customer for an honest review
  • ✓Sharing your Google review link or a QR code
  • ✓Replying to every review, good and bad
  • ✓Flagging a review that breaks Google's policies

Banned

  • ✕Rewards. No payment, discount or free service for posting, changing or removing a review.
  • ✕Asking only happy customers. Google calls this selectively soliciting positive reviews.
  • ✕Pressure at the counter. Do not require a review while the customer is on the premises.
  • ✕Telling them what to write. That includes asking them to name a staff member.
  • ✕Staff targets. Do not ask staff to collect a set number of reviews.
  • ✕Fake reviews. Nothing written by you, your staff or anyone who was not a customer.

What Australian Law Says

The ACCC guidance on online reviews is direct. It is against the law for a business to create fake or misleading reviews, or to arrange for others to do so. Removing genuine negative reviews can mislead consumers too.

$2.9 million

Hiding Negative Reviews

A health booking platform did not publish many negative reviews and edited others.

$600,000

Writing Their Own Reviews

A jobs platform let businesses draft their own reviews and star ratings.

$6,600

Copied Testimonials

A removalist published testimonials copied from another site as its own.

Penalties from three cases described on the ACCC page. On incentives, the ACCC requires any reward to apply whether the review is good or bad, and to be disclosed. Google goes further and bans them outright.

So never buy reviews. Not once. They risk your profile, they can break the law, and customers can usually tell.

Google Review Templates You Can Copy

Said at handover

The Ask

"Thanks for trusting us with the [vehicle]. Reviews keep a small workshop like ours going. If you have a minute later today, would you mind leaving us an honest one on Google? I will text you the link."

It asks for an honest review, not a good one, and it does not ask for it on the spot.

Text, same day

The Link

"Hi [Name], thanks again for coming in today. Here is the link if you have a minute to leave us an honest Google review: [your link]. Cheers, [Your name], [Workshop name]"

One line, one link. It does not suggest a rating or what to say. If there is no reply, send one follow up the next morning, then leave it.

Reply to a good review

The Thank You

"Thanks, [Name]. Glad the [service] on your [vehicle] went smoothly, and good to hear it is driving the way it should. See you at the next service. [Workshop name] Team"

Short, personal and specific to the job. Google advises against using replies to promote offers.

Reply to a bad review

The Calm One

"[Name], thank you for telling us. We are sorry the [issue] was not what you expected. That is not the standard we aim for. Please call [name] on [number] so we can go through it and put it right. [Workshop name] Team"

Never argue and never share private details. Google suggests moving a complex issue to a phone call.

How to Get Your Google Review Link and QR Code

Google gives you both. Open your Google Business Profile, choose Read reviews, then Get more reviews. Copy the short link and save the QR code. Google notes that the QR code can only be made on a computer, not on a phone.

Test it on your own phone. One tap should land on the box with the stars. If a customer has to search your name and hunt for the button, most will not finish.

The steps are from Google's page on creating a review link or QR code. Customers need to be signed in to a Google Account to leave a review.

Where the Link Should Live

  • In the same day text message
  • On a QR card at the counter
  • On the invoice or receipt
  • In your email signature

What a Review System Looks Like After It Runs

Erlandas Saudargas in a workshop reception holding a phone that shows a five star rating

A system, not a blitz.

Singh Mechanic Workshop has more than 250 Google reviews, rated above 4.5 stars. Reviews are answered by hand, in a friendly, human voice.

Reviews did not do it alone. With pages and a complete profile beside them, he went from 42nd to 1st for logbook servicing in his local area.

We hold ourselves to the same system. Vindas Solutions is rated 5.0 on Google, and you can read every review.

Run It Yourself, or Have It Run

Everything on this page is free to use. Or the whole rhythm can run without you thinking about it.

Google Reviews, Asked Straight

Is it against Google's rules to ask for reviews?

No. Google allows a business to ask customers for honest reviews, and gives you a link and a QR code to do it. What breaks the rules is offering a reward, asking only your happy customers, pressuring someone to review while they are on the premises, telling them what to write, or posting reviews that are not from real customers.

Can I offer a discount for a Google review?

Not on Google. Its policy bans payment, discounts and free goods or services in exchange for posting, changing or removing a review. Australian consumer law is also strict: the ACCC says any incentive must apply whether the review is good or bad, and must be disclosed. The simple rule is to offer nothing.

What is the best way to ask, text or email?

Text. It arrives on the phone the review will be written on, it carries the link, and it feels personal. Email works as a backup. The strongest pairing is asking in person at handover, then sending the text with the link the same day.

Should I reply to negative reviews?

Yes, to every one, and reply to those first. Stay calm and factual, apologise where it is fair, and invite the customer to call so you can put it right. Google suggests the same, and warns against sharing private details or making personal attacks. You are writing for every future customer who reads it.

How many Google reviews do I need?

There is no fixed number, because it is relative. You need to be in the range of the workshops holding the map positions you want, with reviews still arriving. A workshop with fewer, recent reviews often looks stronger than one with many old ones.

Can I remove a bad Google review?

Only if it breaks Google's policies. In that case you can flag it for Google to assess. A genuine negative review should stay, and the ACCC notes that removing genuine negative reviews can mislead consumers. A calm public reply usually does more good.
