Why Your Business Is Not Showing Up on GoogleFind the Reason in Two Minutes
A business goes missing on Google for one of eight reasons. The most common are a Business Profile that is unclaimed, unverified or thin, and a website Google has not indexed. Most can be found for free in two minutes, and several can be fixed the same day.
- A five step diagnosis
- All eight reasons, in order
- What to do if you are suspended
- The fix for each one
First, the Good News: It Is Almost Always Fixable
Being invisible on Google feels personal and permanent. It is neither. In nearly every case the cause is one of eight specific things, and the most common ones are the cheapest to fix.
What follows is the same diagnosis we run at the start of every engagement. It is published in full, because you deserve to know the reason before anyone quotes you a retainer.

It feels permanent. It is a checklist.
Two Kinds of Missing
They look the same from the driver's seat. They are fixed in very different ways.
A repair
Not on Google at All
Your profile is unclaimed, unverified or suspended, or Google holds no copy of your website. Something is switched off. These are reasons one to five, and most are free to fix.
A gap to close
On Google, but Too Far Down
Everything works, and you sit on page three. Nothing is broken. Other workshops have more reviews and more pages. These are reasons six and seven.
Find Your Reason in Two Minutes
Work down the five checks in order. Stop at the first one where your answer is no, and open it. That is your reason.
Does Your Business Have a Profile?
Search your business name and suburb on Google. Look for a panel with your name, address and reviews.
No, or it says "Own this business?"
Claim it and verify it. Google says a verified business is more likely to show up in search results. This is the biggest single win available.
Cost and time: Free. Days.
If yes, go to the next check.
Is the Profile Verified and Live?
Sign in to your Google Business Profile and read the status at the top.
No, it is unverified, suspended or disabled
Finish verification, or appeal the suspension. The steps for a suspension are set out further down this page.
Cost and time: Free. A postcard code usually arrives within 14 days.
If yes, go to the next check.
Does Google Hold a Copy of Your Website?
Search site:yourdomain.com.au using your own web address.
No, nothing from my website appears
Set up Google Search Console and submit a sitemap. If a redesign left a block switched on, it has to be removed. Google notes this search may not list every page, so confirm in Search Console.
Cost and time: Free. Days to weeks. A block needs someone technical.
If yes, go to the next check.
Is Your Profile as Complete as the Top Three?
Open the top map result for your main search beside your own profile. Compare categories, services, photos, hours and reviews.
No, mine is thinner or in the wrong category
Fill it in properly, starting with the right primary category. Google says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up.
Cost and time: Free. An afternoon.
If yes, go to the next check.
Do You Have a Page for the Search You Want?
Pick the search you want to win, such as brake repairs in your suburb. Is there a page on your website about exactly that?
No, there is no page about it
Build the page. One page for each main service, and one for each suburb you serve. This is where the weekly work goes.
Cost and time: Weeks of content work.
If yes, read the last card.
All Five Are Yes, and You Are Still Not Showing?
Then nothing is broken. You are being outworked, which is reason seven. A sudden drop after years of ranking is the rare one, reason eight. Both are covered below.
The Eight Reasons, Most Likely First
Every case we have diagnosed lands on this list. It runs from most likely to least.
| Reason | How to check it | The fix, cost and time |
|---|---|---|
| 1. No claimed Business Profile | Search your name and suburb. Is there a panel, and is it yours? | Claim and verify it. Free. Days. |
| 2. Profile unverified or suspended | Sign in to your profile and read the status | Finish verification, or appeal. Free. Days to weeks. |
| 3. Thin or miscategorised profile | Compare yours with the top three competitors | Complete it, with the right primary category. Free. An afternoon. |
| 4. Website not indexed | Search site:yourdomain.com.au | Search Console and a sitemap. Free. Days to weeks. |
| 5. Website blocks Google | A setting left on after a redesign | Remove the block and ask for a recrawl. Quick, but technical. |
| 6. No page targets the search | Is there a page about that exact service? | Build the pages. Weeks of work. |
| 7. Outworked by competitors | Every check passes, and others still rank above you | A campaign of pages and reviews. Months. |
| 8. A penalty from Google | Rankings vanished suddenly. Check Search Console. | Clean up, then ask Google to review. Rare and serious. |

Start at row one. Stop at the first row that describes you.
Why Is My Website Not Showing Up on Google?
Reason four surprises people. Google may hold no copy of your website at all. The site: search takes ten seconds, and nobody should ever charge you for it.
Reason eight is the rare one. Google's page on manual actions says a human reviewer can decide a site breaks its spam policies. Some or all of that site is then not shown. Search Console tells you if it has happened.
How Google Decides Who Shows on the Map
Google publishes this. Its guide to local ranking says map results are based mainly on three things.
Relevance
How well your profile matches what someone searched for. Google asks for complete and detailed business information.
How much you control
Almost all of it
Distance
How far your business is from the person searching.
How much you control
None of it
Prominence
How well known your business is. Google says this draws on your reviews and on how many websites link to you.
How much you control
Most of it, over time

Lit pins are complete, reviewed and close. The dark one is missing at least one.
What This Means for You
You cannot buy your way up. Google states there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.
You also cannot move your workshop closer to the searcher. So the work goes into the two things you do control: a complete, accurate profile, and a growing record of reviews, pages and links.
If Your Google Business Profile Is Suspended
Google may suspend or disable a profile that does not follow its guidelines. It is fixable, and Google publishes the steps on its page about suspended and disabled profiles.
The Four Steps
- 1Fix the problem first. Make sure the profile follows every guideline before you appeal.
- 2Open the appeals tool. It shows the reason for the action and the policy involved.
- 3Submit the appeal with evidence. Google strongly recommends adding evidence.
- 4Wait for the email. Google reviews the appeal and emails you the decision.
Two Mistakes That Cost Weeks
- ✕Creating a new profile. Google says not to create a new profile for the same business while an appeal is under review.
- ✕Letting the evidence form time out. Once you open it, it must be submitted within 60 minutes.
Evidence Google lists as helpful: your business registration, a licence, tax certificates, or a utility bill. The name and address must match the profile.
Sometimes Nothing Is Broken. You Are Being Outworked
This is the diagnosis nobody wants, and the one this page owes you. When every check is clean, there is no glitch. The workshops above you have more reviews, more pages and more history.
That is hard to hear, and it is good news. Everything they did is visible and repeatable, so the path up is known.
Google ranks signals, not seniority. A newer workshop with complete foundations can pass an older one that has gaps.

The gaps are not mysteries. They are the to do list.
