The Short Answer

Three kinds of search bring a workshop its customers. A driver types where they are ("mechanic near me"), what they need ("roadworthy certificate brisbane"), or where you are ("mechanic capalaba"). Every keyword worth your time is one of those three.

The biggest numbers sit in the near me searches. The easiest wins sit in the suburb and service searches. A good plan goes after the easy ones first and lets them fund the patience the big ones need.

Where These Numbers Come From

The Australia wide figures come from our keyword research export in KWFinder, covering 9,566 mechanic searches. The Brisbane and suburb figures come from SE Ranking, pulled in October 2026.

One honest caveat. Search volumes are averages, they move with the seasons, and two tools rarely agree to the digit. Treat every number here as scale. The shape of the data is the lesson, and the shape holds.

What Brisbane Drivers Type

These are searches that name Brisbane. The volumes are modest, and that is the point: each one is a driver in your city who has already decided what they need.

Look at Difficulty Before Volume

Most workshops chase the biggest number on the page. The map shows why that is the slow road.

Diesel at 6, mobile auto electrical at 5, wheel alignment at 7 and pre purchase inspections at 8. Those four bring about 1,490 Brisbane searches a month, and all of them are far easier to win than "mechanic brisbane" at 20.

Win the teal dots first. They bring calls while the harder searches take their time.

Drivers Say "Roadworthy", Even in Queensland

Queensland's official name for it is a safety certificate. Brisbane drivers mostly type the other word. "Roadworthy certificate brisbane" and "roadworthy brisbane" bring 490 searches a month between them, against 90 for "safety certificate brisbane".

Write the page in the words your customers use, and name both. A page titled only "Safety Certificates" is speaking the department's language to people who are searching in their own.

Your Suburb Beats the City

"Mechanic brisbane" gets 720 searches a month. "Mechanic" plus the name of just fifteen Brisbane suburbs gets 2,930, about four times as many, and almost every one is easier to win.

Why the Suburb Wins

Nobody in Capalaba wants a mechanic in Chermside. A driver who types a suburb has told Google exactly how far they will travel, and Google answers with the workshops that belong there.

The competition is thinner too. Thirteen of these fifteen searches score under 10 for difficulty. "Mechanic brisbane" scores 20, and you are up against every workshop in the city for it.

That is why a page for each suburb you serve is one of the first things worth building. It is the work our local SEO for mechanics service is built around.

The Near Me Searches

These are the giants. They are Australia wide figures, because a near me search carries no place name. Google fills in the place from where the driver is standing.

What Is Brisbane's Share?

No tool reports near me searches city by city. As a rough guide, about one in ten Australians lives in Greater Brisbane, which would put "mechanic near me" alone at around 13,500 Brisbane searches a month.

Treat that as an estimate from population. The real point is simpler: it is the largest pool of customers a workshop can reach, and it is shared out one suburb at a time.

How You Win a Near Me Search

Nobody ranks for "mechanic near me" across the country. Your share is decided suburb by suburb, by three things.

How Close You Are

Google shows the driver workshops near where they are standing. You cannot change your address, so the other two matter more.

How Strong Your Profile Is

A complete Google Business Profile with steady, recent reviews. This is where most near me searches are won and lost.

How Well Your Site Matches

A page for each service and each suburb, so Google can see you do the job being searched, in the place it is searched from.

Which Keywords to Go After First

Chase all three kinds, in this order. The early wins bring calls while the big searches take their time.

First

Your Suburbs

"Mechanic" plus each suburb you serve. Low difficulty, and the driver is already close.

Second

Your Soft Services

Diesel, auto electrical, alignments and inspections. Hundreds of searches, little competition.

Third

The Near Me Giants

Won through your profile and reviews. Start early, because they take the longest.

Later

The City Wide Terms

"Mechanic brisbane" and the like. Worth having, and easier once the rest is in place.

One Page per Service, or the Keyword Goes Elsewhere

Google ranks pages. A workshop that does brakes but only lists "brakes" in a row of services is hard to find for a brake search, while the competitor with a full brakes page takes it.

Every row you ticked deserves its own page, with photos, a price guide and the questions drivers ask. That is the work behind our websites for mechanics.

Do It Yourself, or Have It Done

You now know which keywords matter and the order to chase them. There are two honest ways to act on it.

Option one

Do It Yourself

  • List every service you offer and every suburb you serve.
  • Build one page for each, in the words drivers type.
  • Complete your Google Business Profile.
  • Ask every happy customer for a review.
  • Check your rankings every week and adjust.

Everything you need is on this page, and it costs nothing but your evenings.

Option two

Have It Done for You

  • Setup, $500 one off. A week of market research, then your twelve most important pages built or revamped across three weeks.
  • New ranking pages every week. Two a week on the Build plan at $1,000 a month, or four on Boss at $2,000.
  • Your profile, reviews and citations looked after alongside the pages.
  • A report every Friday, in plain English.
  • No lock in contract, and no hidden fees.

The Funniest Number in the Whole File

"SEO for mechanics" gets around 40 searches a month in the whole of Australia. "Mechanic near me" gets 135,000. Almost nobody is searching for what we sell, and nearly everybody is searching for what you sell. That is the best argument for SEO we know, and it comes from our own data.

The Keyword Data, Asked Straight

Are these search volumes exact?

No, and nobody's are. Volumes are averages built from sampled data, they move with the seasons, and different tools report different figures for the same term. They are reliable for scale and comparison: "mechanic near me" dwarfs everything else, and suburb searches together outweigh "mechanic brisbane".

What does the difficulty score mean?

It estimates how hard it is to reach the first page for a search, scored from 0 to 100, based mostly on the strength of the pages already ranking. Each tool scores it differently, so compare scores within one table and never across two. In the Brisbane tables here, anything under 10 is a soft target.

How do I target near me keywords?

Indirectly. Google turns "near me" into wherever the driver is standing, so nobody ranks for it everywhere. You win your share by being the strongest result in your own area: a complete Business Profile with steady reviews, and a page for each service and suburb.

Should my page say roadworthy or safety certificate?

Both. Queensland's official term is safety certificate, but Brisbane drivers search "roadworthy" about five times as often. Lead with the word your customers type, and mention the official name so the page is accurate.

Should I target my suburb or Brisbane first?

Your suburb. Suburb searches are easier to win, and the driver is close enough to book. City wide terms like "mechanic brisbane" are worth having, and they come more easily once your suburb and service pages are ranking.

How many keywords should one page target?

One main search per page, plus its close variations. A page about brake repairs in Capalaba can rank for several ways of saying that. A single page trying to rank for brakes, clutches and air conditioning usually ranks for none of them.
