Marketing for Mechanics Is Simpler Than It Looks

Nobody gets sold to like a workshop owner. Radio spots, magazine spreads, lead platforms, social packages, sign spinners. Someone rings you every week with a new way to spend money.

All of that noise dissolves under one question. When a person needs a mechanic, where do they look? Not where they scroll for fun. Where they look, at the moment the car will not start.

The answer is search, which is why the complete automotive SEO system sits at the centre of everything on this page. Search is not the whole of marketing though, and pretending otherwise would break the promise this site runs on. So below is every channel a workshop gets pitched, judged honestly, including the ones we do not sell.

Cluttered workshop desk covered in ad flyers with a single glowing search bar floating above

One question filters everything: where do people look when the car will not start?

The Three Question Test

Every pitch you will ever hear can be sorted in under a minute. Ask three questions, in this order.

1

Were They Already Looking?

A driver searching "mechanic near me" wants you now. A driver scrolling past your ad wanted something else.

2

Can You Count the Calls?

If nobody can tell you how many calls it brought last month, you are paying on faith.

3

Do You Own It When You Stop?

Some marketing keeps working after the last invoice. Most of it stops the same day you do.

Every Channel, Put Through the Test

No agency talk, and no channel spared, including the ones we do not sell. This is the table we would draw for a mate who owns a workshop.

A tick passes the question, a cross fails it, and a wave passes it in part.

Notice the pattern. The channels that pass all live where the customer is already looking. The ones that fail all interrupt people who were doing something else. Marketing for mechanics is not about being everywhere. It is about being impossible to miss in the one place that matters.

None or one

Your marketing is tight. Keep doing what you are doing.

Two or three

You are leaking. Some of what you pay for cannot be traced to a call.

Four or more

You are renting your customers. Stop paying, and they stop coming.

Rented or Owned: Where Do Your Enquiries Come From?

All marketing brings enquiries one of two ways. You either rent the attention, or you own the thing that earns it. They behave very differently over a year.

Rented: Ads and Lead Platforms

Enquiries arrive the week you start, and hold steady while you pay.

Build in This Order

The channels are the same for every workshop. The order is what separates the ones that grow from the ones that burn money.

Third, and only once proven

The Accelerant

Google Ads, pointed only at pages your own data has shown to convert.

Second

The Engine That Compounds

A new ranking page every week. Pages keep working after they are paid for.

First

The Foundation That Converts

A website whose pages answer real questions, a complete Business Profile, and reviews a stranger would trust. Skip this and you pay for traffic that leaves.

Read it from the bottom up, the way it gets built.

Erlandas Saudargas drawing a three-tier marketing pyramid on a workshop whiteboard

Foundation first, engine second, ads only once the data proves the pages.

Ads First, or Ads Last?

Ads first means paying retail prices to discover which of your pages leak. Every lesson costs a click.

Ads last means the free traffic has already shown you which pages turn visitors into calls. Then you pay to send more people to those pages only. That is how the Boss plan runs ads.

Six Things About Google Ads Most Workshops Learn the Expensive Way

If you run ads yourself, or pay someone to, check these six before you spend another dollar. Open each one for what goes wrong, why it costs you, and how to fix it tonight.

1. Send each ad to the page for that job

What goes wrong. Every ad points at the home page. A driver who typed "brake repairs" lands on a page about everything.

Why it costs you. Google rates the page behind your ad. Its Quality Score guide lists landing page experience as one of three parts: how relevant and useful the page is to the person who clicked. The driver judges it the same way, in about three seconds.

How to fix it. One ad group per job, each pointing at the page for that job. No page for it yet? Build the page first.

2. Block the searches that never book

What goes wrong. Your ad shows for "mechanic jobs", "mechanic wages", "how to change brake pads" and "cheap car parts".

Why it costs you. Each of those clicks costs the same as a real customer, and none of them will ever book.

How to fix it. Add negative keywords: jobs, careers, wages, salary, course, apprenticeship, parts, DIY, how to. Then read your search terms report every week and add whatever else slipped through.

3. Draw the circle where you would actually drive

What goes wrong. The campaign targets all of Brisbane, or the default radius Google suggested.

Why it costs you. A driver forty minutes away will click, and will not come. You paid for the click anyway.

How to fix it. Target the suburbs your customers already come from. Check your last fifty invoices if you are not sure which they are.

4. Count calls, not clicks

What goes wrong. The report says 300 clicks. Nobody can say how many became phone calls.

Why it costs you. Without call tracking you cannot tell a keyword that books cars from one that burns money, so you keep paying for both.

How to fix it. Turn on call reporting and conversion tracking in Google Ads before the first dollar is spent. Judge every keyword by calls and booked jobs.

5. Only run ads when someone will answer

What goes wrong. Ads run all night and all weekend. The calls go to voicemail.

Why it costs you. A driver who needs help now rings the next workshop on the list. You paid to introduce them to your competitor.

How to fix it. Set an ad schedule that matches the hours your phone is answered. If you want the after hours work, make sure someone picks up.

6. Check who is bidding on your own name

What goes wrong. A competitor or a lead platform buys ads on your workshop's name, and sits above you when your own customers search for you.

Why it costs you. You lose bookings from people who were already looking for you by name.

How to fix it. Search your workshop's name on your phone once a month. If an ad sits above you, a small campaign on your own name usually costs very little per click and takes the spot back.

What a Click Costs, Search by Search

Estimated costs per click from our own keyword research. The tool reports them in US dollars, so read them as a guide to which searches are dear, not as a quote.

What the driver typesEstimated cost of one click
mechanic near me open nowUS$4.14
car service near meUS$3.72
mechanic near meUS$3.69
logbook service near meUS$3.50
roadworthy certificate near meUS$3.16
brake repair near meUS$2.58

Look at the top row. The dearest click on the list is the driver who needs someone open now. Ads charge most for the driver in the biggest hurry.

Should You Hire a Marketing Agency at All?

Honestly, not every workshop should. If your bays are full, your team is at capacity and you have no plans to expand, keep your money. You will hold your ground without paying anyone, including us.

Hire an agency when you want growth you can measure: a second location, a bigger team, or bays full of the profitable jobs instead of just full. That is the work we take on, month to month with no lock-in. An agency that needs a contract to keep you is telling you something.

If You Hire Nobody, Do These Five This Week

  1. Finish your Google Business Profile.Every section, with every service listed by name.
  2. Ask every customer for a review. At the handover, with a link sent by text.
  3. Reply to every review.Name the car and the job in your own words.
  4. Make your number a tap to call button. At the top of every page, on a phone.
  5. Check your opening hours. On your profile and your website, including public holidays.

All five are free. Together they pass all three questions.

The Pitch Decoder

If you do talk to agencies, you will hear these lines. Here is what to ask back. Put the same questions to us.

What you will hearWhat to ask back
"We guarantee page one of Google."For which search, and in which suburb? Page one for your own business name is not a result.
"Impressions are up 300 percent."How many phone calls did that become? An impression is someone who scrolled past.
"It is a twelve month contract."What happens to my website and my ad account if I leave in month three?
"We use a proprietary system."Show me the work you did for a client last week, page by page.
"Leads from thirty dollars each."How many other workshops were sent the same lead?
"Let us book a discovery call for pricing."What does it cost, in writing, before the call?

What Marketing Costs a Workshop, and What It Returns

Most agencies answer this with a discovery call. We answer it with numbers, published in full and identical for every workshop on the same plan: a $500 setup, then a plan that matches how fast you want to grow.

PlanThe marketing it buys
Build, $1,000 a monthThe foundation and the engine: two ranking pages a week, backlinks organised, every review answered, two Profile posts a week, a chat bot on your site and a report every Friday
Boss, $2,000 a monthThe full stack: four pages a week, social posts, video, and Google Ads management included as the accelerant on pages already proven to convert
Boost, $500 a monthCurrently unavailable. Profile optimised, citations organised, one ranking page a week and Friday reports

An empty bay costs more than any plan on this page.

Get a Straight Answer on My Marketing

Mechanic Marketing, Asked Straight

How much should a workshop spend on marketing?

Spend where you can measure the return, and start smaller than the agencies pitching you would like. Our plans are $1,000 or $2,000 per month, with the $500 plan currently unavailable, all published openly. More spend does not help until the foundation converts. A workshop leaking calls at a small budget will leak them faster at a large one. Fix the bucket, then turn up the tap.

Is Google Ads worth it for a mechanic?

Yes, as the last step, not the first. Ads pass two of the three questions: the driver is already looking, and the calls can be counted. They fail the third, because the enquiries stop the day you stop paying. Run them once your pages have shown they turn visitors into calls, and point each ad at the page for that job.

Is social media worth it for a mechanic?

For staying familiar to existing customers and showing your community face, yes, in small doses. For winning new urgent work, almost never, because a person with a dead alternator is searching, not scrolling. Post enough to look alive, and put the serious effort where the intent lives.

Do lead generation platforms work for mechanics?

They deliver enquiries, but read the structure. The same lead is often sold to several workshops at once, the cheapest quote usually wins, and every dollar builds the platform instead of your own business. The same money put into your own site, profile and reviews brings enquiries that come to you alone.

What marketing works fastest for a workshop?

Ads produce clicks within days, which makes them the fastest lever and the most expensive teacher. The fastest wins you own are your Business Profile and reviews, which can lift calls within weeks. SEO is the slowest to start and the only one that compounds, which is why the order is foundation first, engine second, ads last.

SEO or Google Ads: which should a workshop do first?

SEO first, in almost every case. Ads rent you a place at the top for as long as you pay. A ranking page keeps bringing calls after it is paid for, and it shows you which pages convert before you spend on clicks. Our free guide on SEO against Google Ads sets out the comparison in full.

The Other Parts of the System

Marketing only works when the parts underneath it do.
