Why the Map Pack Decides Your Month
Search for a mechanic in your suburb right now and look at what Google shows first: a map with three businesses pinned to it. That is the map pack, and for a workshop it is the most valuable spot on the internet. The customers who tap there are not researching. Their car needs work, they want it done nearby, and they call from the listing without ever visiting a website.
Local SEO is the work of earning one of those three positions, plus the results underneath them, for every service you offer and every suburb you serve. It is one of the five parts of the complete automotive SEO system, and for most workshops it is the part that pays for everything else.
Here is the part most workshop owners are never told. The map pack is not a lottery, and you cannot pay your way in. Google decides those three spots on factors it publishes, and a workshop that works them deliberately can outrank bigger names with older websites. Your suburb's map is winnable.

Three spots, decided on factors Google publishes.
What Drivers Type When They Need a Mechanic
These are real average monthly searches across Australia, from our own keyword research. Every one of them triggers a map, and every one is a customer deciding in under a minute.
| What they type | Searches a month | |
|---|---|---|
| mechanic near me | 135,000 | |
| auto electrician near me | 28,700 | |
| car service near me | 22,600 | |
| mobile mechanic near me | 15,600 | |
| roadworthy certificate near me | 6,200 | |
| mechanic near me open now They want someone open this minute | 1,700 | |
| best mechanic near me They will choose on reviews | 1,000 | |
| cheap mechanic near me They are comparing before they call | 900 |
Average monthly searches in Australia. Bars are scaled so the smaller searches stay visible. Our research found more than 900 different searches that combine "mechanic" with "near me".
Read the last three rows again. "Open now", "best" and "cheap" tell you what Google has to decide before it shows anyone: who is open, who is trusted, and who is close. Those are the levers this page teaches you to pull.
Check My Workshop in Two MinutesAre You One of the Three? Check in Two Minutes
You can test this yourself, on your own phone, without us. Tick each one that is true for your workshop. Each check points to the lever it belongs to, which the next section explains.
| Tick if this is true for your workshop | The lever it points to |
|---|---|
| Relevance or prominence. You are closest, so distance is not the reason. | |
| Distance, which suburb pages on your website help you overcome. | |
| Relevance. Google cannot match you to searches for work you have not listed. | |
| Prominence. Mixed details make Google less sure which version to trust. | |
| Prominence. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your ranking. | |
| Gaps you ticked, out of five | 0 |
Every tick is a reason a customer near you is being shown someone else. None of them is permanent, and each one has a known fix.
What Is Missing the Map Costing You?
Now put a number on those gaps. Every week, people near you search for a mechanic and book the workshop Google shows first. When that is another workshop, the job is gone and you never see the invoice for it.
Set the two numbers below to match your workshop.
Every week, customers drive past you to the workshop Google shows first.
Tap the buttons until both numbers match your workshop.
These are your numbers, so we do not promise them. What we do guarantee is measured improvement within 90 days of setup, or a full refund.
The Three Levers Google Actually Weighs
This is not guesswork. Google publishes the three factors that decide local rankings on its own help page, and every hour of local SEO work maps to one of them.
| Google's factor | What it means for you | What moves it |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | How closely your listing matches what the driver typed | A complete Business Profile, the right categories, every service listed, and a page on your site for each service |
| Distance | How far you are from the searcher, or from the suburb they named | You cannot move your workshop, but service areas, suburb pages and citations widen the net |
| Prominence | How well known and trusted your workshop appears | Review count and rating, consistent citations, links, and a website that ranks in the normal results |
Relevance
You write your own profile and your own pages, so this lever is yours to pull today.
Distance
Your address is fixed. What you can change is how many suburbs your website gives Google a reason to show you in.
Prominence
Reviews, citations and rankings are earned week by week. This is the lever that compounds.
Notice what is missing from that table: ad spend. Google states there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. The workshop that does the work holds the position, and keeps holding it while competitors pay for every click above them.
Seven Moves Most Workshops, and Plenty of SEO Agencies, Never Make
The three levers are public. How to pull them is not. These are the seven moves we make on every workshop, in the order we make them. Open each one for what it is, why it works and how to do it yourself.
1. Give every service its own page, then every suburb
What it is. One page for brakes, one for logbook servicing, one for roadworthies, and then a page for each suburb you want work from.
Why it works. Google can only show the pages you give it. A single "Services" page asks one page to match dozens of different searches, and it matches none of them well. This is the relevance lever and the distance lever pulled together.
How to do it. List every job you want more of. Write a page for each, with the suburb in the heading, the price or price range, how long it takes and a photo from your own bays. Singh Mechanic Workshop went from 42nd to 1st for logbook servicing in his local area this way.
2. Fill in the services list inside your Business Profile
What it is. Your Google Business Profile has a services section most owners never open. Each service can carry its own name and description.
Why it works. Google says relevance is how well a profile matches what someone is searching for. A profile that lists "Brake repairs", "Logbook servicing" and "Roadworthy certificates" by name has more to match than one that only says "Mechanic".
How to do it. Open your profile, choose Edit services, and add every job you do in the words your customers use. Then check your primary category is the most specific one that fits, and add every other category you genuinely qualify for.
3. Reply to every review, and name the car and the job
What it is. A reply that says what was done, on what vehicle, signed by your workshop.
Why it works. Google says positive reviews and helpful replies can help your business stand out. A reply that names the service also puts those words on your profile, in front of the next driver who is deciding.
How to do it. Compare these two replies to the same review.
"Thanks mate, appreciate it."
"Thanks Sam. Glad the logbook service on your Hilux went smoothly, and that we had it back to you the same day. See you at the next one. The Example Auto Team"
4. Treat your opening hours as a ranking lever
What it is. The hours on your profile, kept accurate, including public holidays.
Why it works. Google's search team has said that whether a business is open at the time of the search is part of local ranking. Drivers ask for it outright too: "mechanic near me open now" is searched around 1,700 times a month in Australia.
How to do it. List the hours you genuinely answer the phone, and update them before every public holiday. Never list hours you do not keep. Google's rules require your real customer hours, and a driver who arrives at a locked roller door leaves a one star review.
5. Embed your own Google map listing on your key pages
What it is. The map of your actual Business Profile listing, placed on your home page, your contact page and your main service pages.
Why it works. This one is a trade secret, and you will hear SEO people say it does nothing. Google does not list it among its published factors. We have watched rankings improve after adding it, so we do it on every build. Our view is that it ties your website to your map listing in the plainest way possible.
How to do it. In Google Maps, open your own listing, choose Share, then Embed a map, and paste that code into the page. Use your listing, not a general map of the suburb. Set it to load after the rest of the page so it does not slow you down.
6. Use photos from your own workshop, named and tagged to your suburb
What it is. Real photos of your bays, your team and the cars you work on, with the service and suburb in the file name.
Why it works. Stock photos tell Google and customers nothing about where you are. A photo named for the job and the suburb, taken at your address, is one more signal that you are a real workshop in that place.
How to do it. Before you upload a photo, rename it to something like brake-repairs-capalaba-1. Add a short description of what it shows. Upload new ones to your Business Profile every month, and use the same photos on the matching page of your website.
7. Post to your Business Profile every week
What it is. A short update on your profile: a job finished, a seasonal reminder, a new service.
Why it works. Most workshop profiles are set up once and abandoned. A profile with fresh posts shows Google and customers that the business is alive, and each post is another place to name a service and a suburb.
How to do it. Once a week, post one photo and three sentences: what the job was, what car it was on, and which suburb the customer came from. Link it to the matching page on your website.
You can do all seven yourself. Most owners get through the first two and stall, because the rest never ends: a page every week, a reply to every review, a post every few days. That weekly grind is the part we take off your plate.
The Engine Room: Profile, Citations and the Grid
Your Google Business Profile Is the Engine
Your profile is what actually appears on the map, so how complete it is sets the ceiling on your relevance. That means a primary category chosen precisely, every service listed with a description, real photos, hours that are never wrong, and fresh posts.
Most workshop profiles are set up once and abandoned. Yours being worked every week is an advantage most competitors hand you for free.

Most profiles are set up once and abandoned.

Three versions of your name teach Google to trust none of them.
Citations: the Boring Work That Compounds
A citation is any mention of your workshop's name, address and phone number across the web: directories, industry listings and local business registers. One on its own is tiny. Together they are how Google confirms that your business is real, established and where it says it is.
The catch is consistency. A workshop listed under three slightly different names, or at an old address, teaches Google to trust none of the versions. Cleaning and aligning them is unglamorous work that quietly lifts everything else.
How You Measure It: Suburb by Suburb
One ranking number hides the truth, because your position changes street by street. We track it on a grid laid over your area, so you can see exactly how far from your roller door you still make the top three.
A Profile Left Alone
Top three only at the front door, and gone two streets away.
A Profile Worked Every Week
Top three across the suburb, and competitive well beyond it.
An illustration of how a ranking grid reads, not a client's data. Each dot is your position when someone searches from that spot. Teal is the top three.
What Local SEO Looks Like Month to Month, and What It Returns
Every plan begins the same way: a week of research that records where you rank today in Search Console and professional rank tracking, so your improvement is measured against a real baseline. From there the local work runs every week, at the pace of your plan.
| Plan | The local SEO work you get |
|---|---|
| Build, $1,000 a month | Business Profile optimised and worked every week, citations organised, two new ranking pages a week, backlinks organised, every review answered, two Profile posts a week and a report every Friday |
| Boss, $2,000 a month | Everything in Build, plus four new pages a week, four Profile posts a week, video content and Google Ads management included |
| Boost, $500 a month | Currently unavailable. Business Profile optimised and worked, citations organised, one new page a week and Friday reports |

The traffic is already driving past. Local SEO decides who it stops for.
Why the Weekly Pages Matter More Than They Look
Every service page and suburb page is another way your workshop can match a search, which feeds relevance. Every page that ranks feeds prominence. One workshop in our case studies holds more than fifteen top three positions on mobile in its service area, built one page at a time.
If your tracked rankings have not improved within 90 days of setup, everything you have paid is refunded.
